How does Hialeah want a wood fence built?
The city's fence requirements include a standard wood picket detail. As of October 2026 it calls for:
- Pressure-treated 4x4 posts, No. 2 grade or better.
- Pickets at least 5/8 inch thick, also pressure treated.
- Concrete footings 10 inches in diameter and 24 inches deep.
- Post spacing tied to height: 4 feet apart for a 6-foot fence, 5 feet for a 5-foot fence and 6 feet for a 4-foot fence.
Prefabricated wood panels are a different story: the city requires a Notice of Acceptance product approval for them, and the fence has to be built to that document.
What styles can you build?
- Solid privacy fences along the back and sides.
- Board-on-board, so gaps do not open as the wood dries.
- Shadowbox, finished on both sides.
- Short picket fences for a front yard, kept to four feet.
How long does wood last in Miami-Dade?
Wood fences work hard here. Heavy summer rain, humidity, sprinklers and termites all shorten their life. Keep soil and mulch off the bottom boards, seal the wood, and replace a failing post before it takes a section down. If upkeep is a deal breaker, look at vinyl.
What does a wood fence cost?
As of October 2026, Angi's national guide lists wood fencing at about $10 to $45 per linear foot installed, and HomeGuide at about $20 to $50. Taking out an old fence adds about $10 to $20 per foot, per HomeGuide. See fence costs in Hialeah.
